He values and wants to keep his personal bubble pristine, and is just a natural at making enemies with his snarky cynical attitude. If your attitude matches his then he might just respect you…. He's a lone wolf, someone who just wanders around fulfilling his own goals and wishes. It's just a little more complex than that new-age fairy tale stuff. seeing as they're both in the elite four, they're bound to know each other right? the elite four is only really four people big plus the champion. they both seem like the types who don't go out of their way to make friends so maybe they have some sort of silent understanding of each other?
